avid J. Toscano, a seasoned legal professional with over three decades of experience, became a member of the MichieHamlett team in 2024.
His expertise lies in family law, with a focus on collaborative divorce—an approach designed to settle marital disputes amicably, avoiding the need for costly litigation. Additionally, he practices in Wills, Probate, and Estate Planning, helping families plan for their future and deal with the loss of a loved one.
He brings a wealth of trial experience to various courts, including Juvenile and Domestic Relations, General District, and Circuit Courts in the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and surrounding areas.
Prior to joining Michie Hamlett as Counsel, David was a name partner with two other Charlottesville law firms. He is a firm believer in the transformative power of strong and effective legal representation in enhancing the well-being of individuals and their families.
Beyond his legal career, David has dedicated over 25 years to public affairs. He served as the Mayor of Charlottesville in the 1990s and held a position in Virginia’s House of Delegates for fourteen years, including a seven-year tenure as Minority Leader.
An accomplished author, David has written numerous articles on a variety of legal and political topics along with two books: Fighting Political Gridlock: How States Shape Our Nation and Our Lives, University of Virginia Press, 2021, and Bellwether: Virginia’s Political Transformation, 2006-2020, Hamilton Books, 2022.
David provides commentary on state and national political issues at Fights of Our Lives (Substack). He is the publisher and author of Charlottesville Collaborative Divorce, a leading resource for attorneys, divorce coaches, and couples to work through divorce through an alternative to litigation and conflict, and a more productive way to co-parent.
